My husband and I went backpacking through the wichita mountains wildlife refuge and it was absolutely stunning. There were elks and bison all around us!
Bear and otters and turtles, oh my! Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful stopover on the way to the Outer Banks in North Carolina (USA) and a not-well-known spot for seeing black bears! There are more black bears in this region than ALL of the US and it's not the mountains! This refuge is family-friendly (spot wildlife from your car) and has lots of other wildlife including otters, turtles, and over 250 species of birds. It is also a great day trip from Raleigh!
