We wound up using Behr solid stain in Slate. We chose it because of its scores on a Consumer Reports test and we generally have had good results from Behr products. Our deck "after" painting. We liked the effect of the old Behr semi-transparent Redwood color showing through, so we left it.

1: REMOVED all screws 2: FLIPPED all boards 3: SANDED top railing board and some floor boards. Used belt sander and palm sander (50 grit on both) 4: PAINTED railings (deck-over "slate" black) 5: WASHED floor boards with Olympic Deck Cleaner (worked great!) 6: STAINED all bare wood using Ready Seal stain in the Pecan color. I applied using a staining pad that attaches to a broom type pole/handle. 7: DONE!
