Before this bowl-in-bowl approach, I would try to place a flat slab straight into my slump mold and had a hard time getting it into the bowl shape without a lot of creases. With this approach, there are usually no creases and a lot less smoothing. 

Why not just use a hump mold and avoid this altogether? Because I don’t want to deal with the Goldilocks of drying a bowl on a hump mold just long enough to hold its form but not too long that it cracks (I’m a parent with a full-time job so I can’t always get to my pieces when I want to).

I got this idea (sort of) from Vince Pitelka when he was explaining to me how he makes his slump molds from foam insulation sheets.
