One of my favorite movies called Sweet Home Alabama had a scene in it where lightning struck the sand and created a beautiful glass sculpture. Finding out that this was a figment of Hollywood's imagination, I learned what really happens when lightning strikes the sand. It isn't nearly as pretty, but it is fascinating nonetheless.
