Well, the tie quilt is almost finished. (finally) I am stitching the binding, sleeve and label, and then I will be taking this quilt to my brother later this week. This post will show you how to prepare a silk tie for quilting. I always open up my ties instead of working with them as is (closed). Usually the ties I get are from people who have passed away and the ties themselves hold a great deal of sentimental value. I believe that it is best to get the maximum amount of fabric out of each tie, so opening them up yields way more fabric for your project... "It is not very often we come across such an unusual quilt. This quilt was made here on the Island using a variety of men's ties - the colours, patterns and textures are all different. The ties were taken apart and cut and assembled and top stitched. Makes us think of a crazy quilt. Some of these ties have patterns/material from the 1950s or possibly earlier. You can tell that some were quite wide. We counted over 100 different ties. The workmanship in this quilt is a work of art! It is in great vintage condition - a few small things were noticed - tiny pinhole in one tie and the material on another is a bit frayed (there is a underlying piece protecting it (see last 2 photos). The quilt has a small red binding all hand stitched and a rose coloured backing.
