When we see a wildfire, our first response is to put it out. For decades, the Forest Service has done just that when it came to wildland fires. But science has changed the way we think about wildland fire and the way we manage it.

The Wildland Firefighter Apprenticeship Program is designed to enhance and develop future leaders in wildland firefighting. As an apprentice, you’ll receive pay as you complete a 3,000 hour on-the-job training program at a residential wildland fire academy. The Forest Service covers all training costs. When you complete the program, you’ll have journey-level status as a wildland firefighter.

It takes a certain type of person to fight wildfires. It’s not what they look like. Or sound like. It’s not their heritage or their culture. It’s their heart. A seven-minute U.S. Forest Service recruitment video, “The Heart of a Firefighter,” takes viewers as close to being as firefighter as possible through a small screen.
