Couldn't find any good examples of stain colors on red oak so I made them! I am looking for a medium stain with less orange undertones, and have found combinations of stains to be the best bet. Keep in mind the oil based poly will make the stains a bit darker and a bit more honey colored. The difference between no poly and oil based poly (2 coats) is shown for each stain combination so you can see how it changes. Choosing a Minwax stain for red oak floors was not easy. We love Restoration Hardware floors, but did not have reclaimed wood in hand so we recreated it.

Choosing Floor Stains: Top- bottom- 1) Waterborn clear coat 2) Polyurethane 3) DuraSeal Nutmeg Stain 4) Duraseal Provincial Stain 5) Minwax Weathered Oak. Note: DuraSeal Stains are by Minwax. Left side 80 grit sanded, right side 150 gril sanded. The level of sanding effects the stain appearance.
