Vanitas Still Life

Vanitas still life paintings come with a powerful message: that our lives are fleeting and we should make the most of it while we can. A human skull is often (but not always!) prominently featured to reinforce the message of mortality. Although this genre was most popular several hundred years ago, fine examples are being produced even today. Photographic still life falls outside the scope of this board. It includes paintings only.
