Johannes Lutma the Elder, Cartouche in auricular style, from from Festivitates Aurifabris, Amsterdam, 1654. Etching. The organic shapes reflect the influence of anatomical study and the interest in exotic creatures such as sting rays. Two monstrous masks seem to emerge on the top and bottom of the cartouche. Designs like this one worked well on paper, but were also executed in silver, wood, and stone.
