The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke (detail), Richard Dadd, c. 1865. Tate Gallery.   It was given to the Tate Gallery in 1963 by the first world war poet Siegfried Sassoon. He got it as a wedding present from the Dadd family, whose sons were close friends of his. He made the gift to the Tate “in memory of his friend and fellow officer Julian Dadd, a great-nephew of the artist, and of his two brothers who gave their lives in the first world war”.
