Sinterklaas (or more formally Sint Nicolaas) traditionally arrives in the Netherlands each year in mid-November (usually on a Saturday) by steamboat from Spain. His birthday is celebrated annually on Saint Nicholas' eve (5th of December). He brings gifts to the children. Sinterklaas is the basis for the North American figure of Santa Claus. Netherlands- Sinterklaas is St. Nicholas in the Netherlands. Dutch children put wooden shoes filled with hay and sugar for Sinterklaas' horse. Good children receive shoes full of sweet treats as a child we would sing to Sinterklaas.
