Mattel introduced Christie in 1968. Their first attempt in 1967 in launching an African American doll flopped. She had the same face as Christie, but the (smaller) body of Barbie's cousin Francie. Mattel received tons of complaints that she didn't fit into Barbie's clothes, so Christie was launched a year later & could wear Barbie fashions.
