Charcoal and Pastel Owls
A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to have 2 bonus class periods with my 6th graders while my current middle school group (8th grade) was in Washington, D.C. for the annual 7th/8th grade travel week. Because I hadn't had my 6's in a couple of months, and I only had a little over 1 hour of usable art making time with them, I knew I needed a project that would get them excited and keep them on task so that we would have finished pieces of art at the end of our time together. I decided that…
5th Grade Composition Gourds and Pumpkins
For this project 5th graders discussed composition. Composition: is the placement or arrangement of visual elements in a work of art. We discussed how generally when we start to draw we put the subject right in the center of the page. Leaving nothing to the imagination. For this project students were given pumpkins and gourds to draw from to create an interesting composition. We followed these guidelines: 1. The object cannot be in the center of the page, put it on the page in an interesting…

organic shape MONSTERS!
This is a great lesson I do every year with my Kindergartners and I never get tired of it! It is a great lesson to teach about geometric-vs-organic shape. First, I read them the book "Jeremy Draws a Monster" by Peter McCarty. It is an excellent book about a boy who draws a monster who is not a very good friend. The students then decide that if they were to draw a monster they would make a nice monster, even if they looked mean. I just love the answers they have for everything! I give each of…

* Make Fall Leaves With Elmer's Glue and Chalk
Today's project is a classic "art teacher" project. If you draw a picture with glue on construction paper and let it dry, you can color over it with chalk or chalk pastels and it will create a stained glass effect. The girls and I decided to give it a fall twist and make leaf pictures. It's very pretty on dark paper (think: black, navy blue, or purple) but you can do it on any color. We split this project up into two different days to allow the glue time to dry and because that was just the…

4th Grade "Busy Trees" - Trunks with Character
Going through the stash of great art samples that my predecessor left me, I found construction paper tree trunks which inspired this project... there is a book by Lois Ehlert, Nuts to You which may have been the origin of creativity. Either way, it lends a great literature connection along with another book, Busy Tree. Last year the students drew owls on black construction paper with oil pastels. See that project here. It was one of my favorite projects... so this was a great way to do the…
