Thank you PTO and students for Teacher Appreciation Week!

The teachers at Hillside School were overwhelmed this week - in a good way! Each day, we arrived at school to find some sort of special treat presented by the PTO in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week. We are so blessed and grateful. Here are the "treats" given to use each day: Monday - Flowers on our doors with each petal containing a special "Thank you" from different students Tuesday - a Flash Drive on our desk with a special note, along with muffins, pastries, bagels, m&ms in the…

If my listening center table on donors choose doesn't get funded I think I'll go to IKEA and make this instead. But I think I'd choose a Lak coffe table instead of the side tables so more kids could fit

Spaghetti, Marshmallows, and COOPERATION!

I facilitated a lesson with 4th graders that involved spaghetti, marshmallows, and cooperation! I divided the class into groups of three or four students. Each group received dry spaghetti noodles and a bowl of marshmallows. I instructed students that they would be making a tower with their group members. I told them that the group who had the highest tower at the end of ten minutes would get a prize from me. After the 10 minutes were up, I asked groups what they thought the point of the…

Stuff I Actually Made from Pinterest: Classroom Edition #3

This is the IDEAS issue of Stuff I Actually Made From Pinterest: Classroom Edition. Here are some great ideas I got from Pinterest. I am obsessed! I know that Pinterest has some new controversial rules, but can I shamefully admit that I don't know them yet? I suppose I better look into that... At any rate, here are some ideas I loved from pinning. To follow my classroom boards on Pinterest, click the Pinterest logo on the right sidebar! Mine is nowhere near as BEAUTIFUL as the original post…

Upper Grades Are Awesome

Many times I read blogs of fabulous teachers and ask myself...how do they do it all and do it so well? I'm lucky if I get learning goals on the board! I've been hearing a lot lately about growth mindset, and my sometimes slightly-behind-the-times district is finally starting to talk about it too. I had hoped to take an online course recently, but the tuition was hefty. And, I just haven't had a chance to read up on it much. Well, I'm really excited because a site I already use daily is…

Mrs. Gillespie's thoughts

We talked about church symbols in religion today, and I took the children on a field trip. We went to St. Paul's Cathedral in London, England. Oh, you're right, it wasn't a REAL field trip, just a virtual tour. The children really enjoyed the spectacular moving images and different views from each part of the massive cathedral. They noticed different details and all wanted to jump on a plane to actually tour this impressive structure. All of them begged for the link, so here it is…

Blog On Fire

I'm so excited to have received the Blog on Fire Award! Thank you Denise from Sunny Days in Second Grade. I have to tell you seven interesting things about myself because of this honor. I have decided my blog will only be about teaching ideas and not a blog about my personal life. I am making an exception for this award, but this will not take the place of my weekly teaching idea. So her goes: 1. I'm terrified of cats. I think it's because I watched the movie "Strays" when I was a kid. 2. I…
