May 20, 1768: Born, Dolley Madison. The wife of President James Madison, renowned for her hospitality when her husband was in office, faced severe poverty during her widowhood. Unable to sell her husband's papers until shortly before her own death, she instead sold Montpelier, the family estate, along with its slaves and furnishings. This daguerreotype was taken about a year before her death.
