Just Give Me a Little Space

The colonization of Earth's orbit, the Moon, Mars, and other planets still promises a kind of space utopia for Homo sapiens. Since the second half of the 20th…

Stephan's Quintet, a compact group of galaxies discovered about 130 years ago and located about 280 million light years from Earth, provides a rare opportunity to observe a galaxy group in the process of evolving from an X-ray faint system dominated by spiral galaxies to a more developed system dominated by elliptical galaxies and bright X-ray emission. Colour composite image of Centaurus A, revealing the lobes and jets emanating from the active galaxy’s central black hole with a mass of about 100 million solar masses. Centaurus A is an active galaxy about 12 million light years from Earth, the fifth brightest galaxy in the sky, making it an ideal target for amateur astronomers. There is strong evidence that Centaurus A is a merger of an elliptical with a spiral galaxy. Hubble Space Telescope, Cv Pdf, Solar Mass, All About Space, Dark Galaxy, Interstellar

The above picture of Triton, Neptune’s moon was taken in 1989 by the only spacecraft ever to pass Triton: Voyager 2. Voyager 2 found fascinating terrain, a thin atmosphere, and even evidence for ice volcanoes on this world of peculiar orbit and spin. Ironically, Voyager 2 also confirmed the existence of complete thin rings around Neptune. Carl Sagan Cosmos, Planets And Moons, Earth From Space

The bright star AE Aurigae, visible toward the lower center of image, is so hot it is blue, emitting light so energetic it knocks electrons away from surrounding gas. When a proton recaptures an electron, light is emitted, as seen in the surrounding emission nebula. In this 2015 image pictured above, AE Aurigae, the Flaming Star, and the surrounding nebula IC 405, the Flaming Star Nebula, is shown 1,500 light-yrs away and spans 5 light-yrs toward the constellation of the Charioteer (Auriga). Orbiting a mere 3,700 miles above the surface of Mars, Phobos is closer to its planet than any other moon in our solar system. Mars’ gravity is drawing in Phobos by about 6.6 feet every 100 years. Scientists expect Phobos to be pulled apart in 30-50 million years by tidal forces, the mutual gravitational pull of the planet and the moon. The same fate may await Neptune’s moon Triton, which is also slowly falling inward towards its planet. (NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Arizona) Mars Gravity, Nasa Jpl, Our Solar System

The picture was taken by Astronaut Scott Kelly on August 9, 2015, the 135th day of his one-year mission in space on the International Space Station. The Milky Way stretches the curve of Earth in the scene that also records a faint red, extended airglow. The galaxy's central bulge appears with starfields cut by dark rifts of obscuring interstellar dust. Since November 2000, people have been living continuously on the International Space Station.
