It’s one of the oldest cultivated flowers in history. I love them for their color and petal variety, and that although pansies appear delicate, they are actually tough plants. This bouquet study is a practice in watercolor play. Laura Kirste on Instagram: "After working out my ideas for how to render this Admiral butterfly in Procreate, I drew it in my smallest sketchbook with pencil and watercolor. This butterfly was special to me because as we were traveling through Texas, I had one land on me in three different locations. The first occasion was particularly meaningful as it was like a hug from God during a time of grieving. This style of drawing appeals to me, but is not one I’m comfortable with yet as I’ve only tried it a couple of times. The challenge is to sketch or draw daily, any subject, any style. I’ve decided to try various materials and techniques with the same flower (Lilies). I’ll get to know the flower better as I’m exploring various mediums and styles. Here I’ve used pencil then fine sepia Bianyo Sketch Liner pens and erased my pencil marks. The real challenge for me was getting the accuracy of this Rose Lily with its many layers of petals. It’s not about the results, it’s about putting in the mileage. Laura Kirste on Instagram: "The brutal thud startled me. I immediately recognized the heartbreaking sound of a bird strike. Darting to the massive log cabin window, I was relieved when I saw the Tennessee Warbler alive and standing, although stunned and still with closed eyes. I watched as it slowly recovered, appreciating its peridot Fall plumage and diminutive 3” size. Eventually the sweet little jewel awoke, turned, and swiftly disappeared back into the forest greenery. I celebrated the survivor with a smile and gratitude in my heart. And I wondered, when a Tennessee Warbler sings, does it tweet with a Southern twang? As they napped and preened a few feet away I took in every marvelous detail. A loose backlit downy feather fluttering on a shoulder. Pearlescent birds in the rhythmic movement of relaxed breathing. A friendly waterfowl glance. I felt honored that these majestic birds trusted me to be so near, as if they knew my focus was all about appreciating their beauty.
