Meeting Joaquin Bacardi in Puerto Rico - I point my camera towards the other side of the bay and scan the coastline. I stop as I see two wind turbines appear in my screen. I zoom in. “There it is,” I say to myself. “The largest rum distillery in the world!”
Born to be Wild One of the things on my bucket list has always been to ride the Route 66 on a Harley-Davidson. Scenes of the Easy Rider movie enter my mind, where Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper drive the long straight roads of the American Southwest. The plan is to start in Flagstaff, Arizona and drive all the way down to the Santa Monica pier, the end of the Route 66. And of course make a detour to the Grand Canyon and to Las Vegas.
Meeting Richard Branson at TED - We are on our way to TED, a global platform for sharing ‘ideas worth spreading’. Richard Branson is tonight’s main guest and he will be talking to TED’s curator Chris Anderson. For us as entrepreneurs, Richard has long been a source of inspiration – we are particularly interested in his vision for saving the planet. He believes in making a difference and is always looking for the next big thing. I wonder what the next big thing is going to be tonight.
An icon of the Brazilian fashion scene, Lenny Niemeyer started designing swimwear in the 1980s when she moved from São Paulo to Rio. It all started when she was looking for bikinis – for herself and for friends back in São Paulo – and was disappointed by the choice. “So I started designing them myself,” she says with a smile.
The best way to build a strong personal brand is to give people something to talk about, creating talk value. On the other hand, over-self-promotion is not a good option either. There is another option… ‘storytelling’. You can write your story in a narrative form and an informal tone of voice.
Dubai Superlatives - A few thousand years ago you had to go to Giza, Egypt, to find the tallest manmade structure. The Great Pyramid was about 140 metres high and held the world record for over 4,000 years. In 1889 however, Gustav Eiffel designed his iconic tower for the 1889 Paris World Fair, the first structure to exceed 300 metres
Meeting Richard Lee (Pepsico) - "Activate Your Thirst" - We meet up with Richard Lee, Pepsi’s Global Marketing VP for sparkling drinks, in Shanghai. We met Richard in 2009 when he was based in New York as global brand director for Pepsi when he told us the story of how they introduced Pepsi in China and created higher brand preference than its main competitor (Coca-Cola). After a number of years in New York, he decided to return to Shanghai to master the Chinese market.
Oskar Metsavaht - "Make sustainability cool" - We have arranged to meet Oskar Metsavaht at one of the small beachfront cafés on Arpoador Beach, where we find him sitting on the terrace gazing out at the waves and the quiet ocean beyond. As soon as we introduce ourselves he leaps up with a big smile and warmly shakes our hands. “Welcome, have a seat, come and enjoy the view!” he says with a broad gesture.
Meeting GE in NY - Healthymagination - As Anouk gets up to go and order another coffee, I take a look around. “Your average Starbucks crowd,” I think to myself. “Apart from that lot at the next table. I wonder what they’re up to?” I catch part of the conversation...
Roberto Stern and the movement of Grupo Corpo. - Do you know why I love this country so much? I’ll tell you one of the reasons. Because we embrace life to the full. We are passionate. Energetic. And we love beauty. I wanted to try and merge two aspects of that beauty in one of our collections. Fixed form and fluidity – jewellery and dance. And so we got in touch with Grupo Corpo – one of Brazil’s most flamboyant dance troupes.
