In 1826 Niépce produced the first permanent chemically-produced photographic image, though lens-generated images go back centuries previous... and as with many modern technologies, the 'invention' was not down to one person, but rather related technologies springing up near-simultaneously in different countries (invention by zeitgeist, you might say...). This board goes up to 1899.

Gibson Girls - much more fun than previously thought

c. 1910 I fought to get this one. I love the shorter girl's face - it's such a joyful picture! They must be visiting Coney Island or some other early-1900s hot spot for the young in the summer. The swimsuits are great examples of early bathing suits. Must have been hellish for the girls trying to swim in that!
