A Peek Inside My Class and Two Freebies for Yours

Back to school means many things to teachers. Probably at the top of our lists is organizing and putting together our classrooms. I always want my room in decent shape before I can even think about planning. It dawned on me that I've never really shared pics from my classroom. Each year I do some tweaking, editing, and rearranging. These pictures reflect where I am today. I'll live with it and probably make changes. But for now, this is what my class is looking like . . . Here is my new (and…

It’s Calendar Time!

Phew. It’s done. A Labor of Love :) Here’s a sample of what the skill pages look like at the end of the year for all of my first grade friends and what they look like blank: (On these pages, you’ll be able to type (or have the kids write) the month at the bubble on the top.) Each month is a bit different to allow for student growth and new teaching. I designed it with Kindergarten in mind, but there are programmable pages at the end so first grade or even pre-k could use it. While I was at…

Calendar Time » Autism Adventures

Calendar skills are essential for any child striving for independence. Traditional K-1 classes have a daily calendar routine filled with music, counting and reciting the days of the week. This is a great way for children to master their days independent living skills. I put a heavy emphasis on independent life skills for my students. …

Morning Meeting Time

I love the morning meeting time. There are so many skills that can be reviewed within these routines and we all know how much kinders love routines. I use equity sticks and do not have an assigned "calendar helper" or "weather helper" etc. I find that it keeps my students more engaged if they don't know exactly when they will be called on to help or ask a question. Once I get all the routines up and running I can run through the entire class at least once and sometimes twice. I'm listing the…

What the Teacher Wants!

Our class has a cute, new, little friend! Meet our new class pet! A chinchilla! A couple weeks ago I was contacted by Petsmart who wanted to give my class a gift card to pick out a class pet. After a lot of thinking and research, I decided a chinchilla would be the perfect pet for my class. (Click here to learn more about Petsmart's educational programs and to learn more about how you could earn a grant to get a pet for your own classroom.) Chinchillas are not cheap, but luckily my gift card…

Growing Kinders

When I was teaching Kindergarten, I spent most of the year teaching CVC words. Now that I am teaching first grade I spend about the first quarter of the year teaching and reviewing CVC words. When the children are more secure on their CVC skills, we move on to blends, then digraphs, and finally vowel teams. I use Words Their Way to differentiate my Word Study groups, and within these groups I have kiddos working on beginning sound sorts all the way up to more complicated long vowel…

A HUGE thank you to all of you for following me throughout the past couple of years. I find joy in creating items for you and want to also thank you for supporting my classroom. I finally have a little breathing time today, so I wanted to thank you all by creating a freebie which can get you excited to be thinking ahead to a fresh new year (as some…
