Field Marshal Bernard "Monty" Montgomery (1887–1976), Commander-in-Chief, 21st Army Group, Second World War (after Frank O. Salisbury, painted 1950). He neglected to visit the battlefield for Operation Market Garden in late 1944 (a fiasco) because he was having his portrait painted--again. Nevertheless, according to Andrew Roberts, he was the greatest British field commander since Wellington.
