1941. Entrance to the Jewish Quarter in Amsterdam. The Jewish Quarter in Amsterdam during the second world war included the Jodenbreestraat, Uilenburg, Vlooienburg, Waterlooplein, Rapenburg Nieuwe Herengracht, Nieuwmarkt, Sint Antoniesbreestraat, de Plantage, Weesperstraat and Weesperplein up to the Nieuwe Kerkstraat. During the occupation the German occupier placed large fences around the neighborhood. Only 11,000 of the 80,000 Jews of Amsterdam survived the war. #amsterdam #worldwar2

Het Leidseplein met links het American Hotel (Américain) en rechts de stadsschouwburg die bekend stond als de "houten kast". Hij werd gebouwd in 1772 als "noodschouwburg", maar bleef meer dan een eeuw in gebruik. In 1874 werd de schouwburg verbouwd en voorzien van imposante stenen buiten muren.
