R2D2 was developed for Star Wars, Part One, by Ralph McQuarrie (Sketches), John Stears (Character Development) and Tony Dyson (Model Design), who had his own Studio in the UK, called "The White Horse Toy Company". Played by Midget, Kenny Baker, the Novel refers to this Robot Model as a "Thermocapsulary Dehousing Assister". Later it's simply refered to as a Robot of the "Astromech Droid" Make and Model Sort.
