Gen. John Burgoyne - “Gentleman Johnny”, a British general and playwright. In 1777. He was at the head of the British dispatched for the invasion of the colonies from Canada. In this disastrous expedition, he gained possession of Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Edward for which he was made a lieutenant-general. At Saratoga he was hemmed in by a superior force led by Horatio Gates. On Oct. 17, 1777, his troops, laid down their arms. The success was the greatest the colonists had yet enjoyed.

1798 British "Tarleton" Cavalry officer's helmet at the National Army Museum, London - From the curators' comments: "This pattern of helmet was named after Lieutenant Colonel Sir Banastre Tarleton who commanded the British Legion during the American War of Independence (1775-1783). With its bearskin crest the tarleton was regarded as 'the handsomest' of helmets and was reportedly much admired by foreign forces at the time."
