Mary Dyer - Barrett (1611 - 1660), American martyr for religious freedom. Hanged in Boston. My 8th great-grandmother.

The wretched Pilgrims hang Quaker Mary Dyer high & dry! No religious liberty living among Pilgrims.

Mary Barrett Dyer was an English Puritan turned Quaker who was hanged in Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony (now in present-day Massachusetts), for repeatedly defying a Puritan law banning Quakers from the colony. She is one of the four executed Quakers known as the Boston martyrs.

Today in History: On October 27, 1659, two Quakers, William Robinson and Marmaduke Stevenson, were executed in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The two Quakers came to the United States in 1656 to escape religious persecution in their home country of England. The two had violated a law passed the previous year that banned Quakers from simply practicing their religion. The Quakers were one of the first organized groups in the Americas to demand sexual equality and an abolition of slavery.
