“The idea for the autobahn was conceived in the late 1920s during the Weimar Republic, but construction was slow, due to economic problems and lack of political support. The first road was completed in 1932 between Cologne and Bonn. “Days after the 1933 Nazi takeover, Hitler embraced an ambitious autobahn construction project. The autobahns were not intended as military infrastructure as often stated because all major military transports in Germany were done by train to save fuel.
