Moroccan maritime cutlass, 17th to 18th century. The steel blade of characteristic form with copper quillons in assymetric curve and engraved silver mount at forte comprising floral motif, the faceted rhino-horn hilt with ribbed-dome finial, wooden scabbard with red-ground velvet and gilt metal-thread embroidery comprising six-point star and vegetal motif, with ensuite engraved copper chape and lock with central rectangular panels comprising floral motifs.

Orig:  Sword designed by the visionary cavalry officer, John Gaspard Le Marchant (1766-1812) In 1795, in collaboration with the Birmingham sword cutler Henry Osborn, he designed a new cavalry sabre, which was adopted for the light cavalry and much feared by the French. In 1796 he produced the much celebrated “The Rules and Regulations of the Sword Exercise of the Cavalry” which was instantly adopted by the British Army as its official manual. .

The short version of the Ottoman kilij sometimes known as ''pala'', with deeply curved wide blade and ‘T’ spine, used from the early 17 C. for more than 300 years well into the 20th C. The hilt of classical form is made of brass cross guard and horn grips with bulbous pommel and brass grip strap. The original wood scabbard is covered with leather, mounted with chased brass locket and chape. length 32.09 INCHES (81.5cm), blade 26.77 INCHES (68cm), length with scabbard 33.86 INCHES (86cm).
