On the evening of July 1956 off the fogbound coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, the Italian luxury liner Andrea Doria was struck mid-ship by the bow of the Swedish ship Stockholm. 52 lives were lost in the disaster, and the Andrea Doria sank the next day.
