Candle snuffers.  Used extensively during 1700s. Wicks of tallow candles were very thick to soak up the excess fat and avoid spillages. Wicks were not always burnt up and retained their length as the candle burned down. Flame did not burn as brightly and the wick would produce excess smoke so wicks of tallow candles were trimmed while they were burning. collections.museums-sheffield.org.uk

Such pieces were made in a variety of styles but this particular example has a square base with rounded angles, sits on four rococo feet, and the bottles are held in openwork compartments with central handle."

A Dutch silver candle snuffer and stand,   Mark of Dirk Westrik, Amsterdam, 1740 and 1741 -   The stand on octagonal stepped pedestal with reeded borders rising to a baluster stem surmounted by a rectangular holder with reeded stepped rim, with curved handle and plain curved thumbpiece, the snuffers of scissor form with baluster terminal, marked on base of stand and snuffer  20 cm. high  292 gr. (2)
