The Gatling Gun, named after its inventor Richard J. Gatling, was the first machine gun in history. By turning a crank, crews would feed bullets into a rotating series of 6 barrels that could fire at a rate of 600 rounds per minute. While an important innovation, less than 20 were ever actually used in the war and even then, only in the function of an artillery piece.

The Gatling gun is one of the best known early rapid-fire weapons and a forerunner of the modern machine gun. It is well known for its use by the Union forces during the American Civil War in the 1860s, which was the first time it was employed in combat. Later it was also famously used in the assault on San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War.[1]
