Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first president to fly in an aircraft while in office. Although the first plane was an amphibian Navy plane, there were no reports that the president ever flew in the aircraft. During World War II however, Roosevelt traveled on the Dixie Clipper, a Boeing 314 flying boat 5,500 miles to Morocco in 1943. With German submarines in the Atlantic, air travel quickly became the preferred method of presidential transportation.
