"Ivan Aivazovsky (Feodosiya 1817 - id. 1900)."  Russian painter of Armenian ethnicity, based in his native Crimea, best known for his seascapes, which constitute more than half of his paintings. Considered one of the most prominent  Russian artists and one of the greatest marine artists of the 19th century. His technique and imagination in depicting the shimmering play of light on the waves and seafoam is especially admired, and gives his seascapes a romantic yet realistic quality.
