Frequently cited as the greatest boxer of all time Robinsons performances in the welterweight and middleweight divisions prompted sportswriters to create pound for pound rankings where they compared fighters regardless of weight. Boxing legend Sugar Ray Robinson (1921-1989) is welcomed home from London on August 1, 1951 by his wife Edna Mae (1915-2002) and his sister Evelyn Robinson Nelson (1919-2009). Mr. Robinson was returning home after a loss to British champion Randy Turpin. He told reporters upon arrival, “It’ll be a different story when I fight Randy Turpin again next month.” He won the rematch against Mr. Turpin just one month later in New York City.
