Lettuce can thrive in trays as shallow as 4” (10 cm). Plant seedlings on 4” (10 cm) centers (4” or 10 cm apart in each direction), or sow seeds and thin to this spacing. When the plants are 4-6” (10-15 cm) high, harvest as needed by cutting them off 1” (2.5 cm) from the ground with a pair of scissors, and water the stumps.
