"Mail Boat Landing at Quebec" by Cornelius Krieghoff (1860) at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto - In 17th-19th century North America (and especially Canada) the rivers and waterways were a key component of transport. Canada's economy was based upon staples and natural resources such as fur and lumber that had to be transported to trading posts via canoes on the rivers - and this carried over into everyday life as well, such as this mail-carrying boat navigating the river ice.
