Ediacara..- EDIACARIEN: -650 à -541 Ma, dernière période géologique de l’ère Protérozoïque. Elle doit son nom aux collines Ediacara, situées 650 km au N d’Adélaïde, en Australie.

Two specimens of the wonderfully weird fossil Dickinsonia, a 550-million-year-old, flat, corrugated fossil “thing” from the Ediacaran Hills of South Australia. What is it? After more than 60 years of study, we’re still not sure, although we think it’s an animal. And it was first found in Australia.

A fossil of Spriggina floundensi, discovered in the Flinders Range of South Australia. This animal, which may have been a precursor to the trilobites, lived during the Ediacaran Period, the last of the Precambrian Eon.

Charnia: genus name of a frond-like Ediacaran life form w/segmented ridges branching alternately to the right & left from a zig-zag medial suture. It is a type of fractal life form that grew on the sea floor & is believed to have fed on nutrients in the water. Charnia is not a plant; it lived deep down on the ocean floor, which had too little sunlight for photosynthesis to occur
