This corset and hoop skirt were commissioned by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts for display in the 2004-05 textile department exhibit "High Style and Hoop Skirts: Fashions of the 1850s". They are based on primary source research found in museums, private collections, and period advertisements. The drawers and shift are authentic garments from the MFA collection. This set of undergarments show what a women would have worn under a crinoline dress. It is clear to see how the corset is shorter to allow the crinoline cage to sit steadily on the body.
