Benjamin Montgomery  was born into slavery in 1819 in Loudon County, Virginia.  Montgomery obtained employment at a general store owned by his master Joseph Davis. He would eventually take over the entire purchasing and shipping operations of the store. During those days, merchandise was shipped by boat on the rivers connecting counties and states. However a timely shipment was not guaranteed since the depths of water in different spots throughout the river made navigation difficult.

African-American inventor Elijah the Real McCoy was born in Canada on May 2, 1844, the son of escaped slaves.  During his life time McCoy received 57 patents for devices which improved versions of his automatic lubrication process. The high quality of McCoy's inventions gained such notoriety that the phrase "the Real McCoy" was coined to distinguish his inventions from cheap imitations.

It was in 1970 that Carl Brashear finally attained the goal he had striven for through so many trialsome years. He was named Master Diver, the first African American in Navy history to do so.
