Mira, from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer

A speeding star can be seen leaving an enormous trail in this image from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer. Nothing like this stellar "tail" had even been seen before at the time the telescope spotted it. The tail stretches across 13 light-years of space.

The Galactic Core ~ This composite color infrared image of the center of our Milky Way galaxy reveals a new population of massive stars and new details in complex structures in the hot ionized gas. This panorama, the sharpest infrared picture ever made of the Galactic core, combines the sharp imaging of the Hubble Space Telescope's Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer with color imagery from a previous Spitzer Space Telescope survey done with its Infrared Astronomy Camera…

Hubble's newest camera captured a pair of galaxies dancing, nicnamed "the mice" because of long tails of stars & gas. The pair will eventually merge into one galaxy. This image shows the most detail & stars ever seen in these galaxies.

NGC 604 is about 50 times the size of the familiar Orion Nebula, here shown approximately to scale. Both are hotbeds of star formation but on vastly different scales. A cluster of some 200 massive type O and Wolf-Rayet stars ionize NGC 604, setting it aglow in vivid reds and green, similar to the Orion Nebula. - Credit: NASA / Hubble Heritage Team (AURA / STScI) / Wikipedia

Photo: This festively colorful nebula, called NGC is one of thelargest known seething cauldrons of star birth in a nearby galaxy.

This stunning picture of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is a composite of images taken by three of NASAs Great Observatories. Infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope are colored red; optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope are yellow; and X-ray data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory are green and blue

This stunning false-colour picture shows off the many sides of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. Located light-years away, Cassiopeia A is the remnant of a once massive star that died in a violent supernova explosion 325 years ago.
