This affectionate seated couple was made by an unknown master in circa 1910. Only five seated Baule couples, carved out of one piece of wood, are known to us. Bernard de Grunne will offer during TEFAF Maastricht 2016 a collection of 18 rare seated statues from the Baule tribe (Central Ivory Coast).

It took about 4 years to gather the 18 seated statues from the Baule tribe, presented by Bernard de Grunne at TEFAF Maastricht 2016. As Baule artists never signed their works, De Grunne named the seven identified Baule "Masters" after famous collectors and dealers. The "Ascher" Master, a reference to renowned dealer Ernst Ascher, defines a corpus of 12 figures. These statues have high coiffures, finely carved, with some deep red patina and an intense facial expression.
