Bathing Cap by Austelle ca. 1923. The first bathing caps were usually handsomely decorated, and in fact served to protect the wearer’s hair more from the sun than from the water. This cap was designed by hat maker Austelle of the Modes de Paris. The head covering is made by hand, of sand-coloured straw and silk. The ribbon adornment on the right side is also of silk, in sea-blue and gold stripes.
