Casket with Erotes and Animals, Date: 12th century Geography: Made in Northern Adriatic, Culture: Italian or Byzantine, Medium: Bone plaques and ornamental strips over wooden casket with silk lining; copper handle, clasps, lock plate, and nails. In scenes recalling antiquity, two panels on the lid of this casket show erotes, fighting and playing music . The style of the animals represented on the four sides suggests that the carving was done by Italian artists drawing on Byzantine models.

Casket, carved ivory with gilt-bronze fittings Spain, Cordoba; c. 966-96  The ivory casket belongs to a little group of masterfully carved ivory objects that were made for the Spanish Umayyad court in the second half of the 10th century. The casket is the largest in the group, carved from a single tusk. It is also one of the most monumental.
