This weapon is called a hoeroa and is made from the lower jaw of a sperm whale. It was held by a rangatira and symbolised authority  This particular hoeroa was believed to have originally been a gift to Queen Victoria from a Māori chief. It was returned to New Zealand in the middle of the 20th century.

MASSUE «Wahaika» en bois de forme évasée et arrondie, le côté tranchant sculpté d'une encoche séparant les deux lobes de la massue dans un joli mouvement. Représentation d'une grande figure de Tiki construite à partir d'une succession de motifs curvilignes s'interpénétrant. Le pommeau est sculpté d'une imposante tête de Tiki grimaçante. Peuple Maori.
