Two-handed sword of Jacob CabeljauwLength 190.6cm.In 1573 the town of Alkmaar was besieged by Spanish troops. The Dutch commander Cabeljauw led the forces that defeated this attack and forced the Spanish to retreat. He was promoted to military governor of Alkmaar and was probably presented with this sword as a token of honour. The text on the blade was presumably added in the 18th century to record the sword’s historical significance.Source: Rijksmuseum.nl

Rembrandt, The Jewish Bride, 1667 - While she doesn’t seem to mind it much, we can’t help but feel awkward by the whole hand on the clothed breast thing that’s happening here. Maybe it’s the fact that they both seem so lost in thought?

CLEOPATRA is a genius who invented multi-valued coins. To increase the money supply she simply created different valuations of coins, breaking the ancient use of weight where a coin with twice the value weighed twice as much. The markings rather than the metal content determined their value. A coin might feel light in the hand, but if Cleopatra said it was worth a tetradrachm, it was worth a tetradrachm. The arrangement was both lucrative to her and encouraged an export-driven economy.

This is the only standing statue left of Cleopatra, people say she is beautiful but they commonly mistake her for Elizabeth Taylor.
