In 1930, 16 year James Cameron narrowly survived a lynching that claimed Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith and inspired the famous song Strange Fruit. He would later found three chapters of the NAACP, serve as Indiana's State Director of the Office of Civil Liberties and found America's Black Holocaust Museum. Listen to a great NPR interview with him about that harrowing night and his miraculous survival: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129025516
