"Frank Lloyd Wright's Imperial Hotel in Tokyo was renowned for withstanding the Great Kantō Earthquake (8.3 Richter scale) earthquake of 1923, when nearly all other important buildings were destroyed by seismic activity or fire."  Source: Atlantic.com.  When the US embassy collapsed, Ambassador Cyrus Woods took refuge there.  Wright insisted on the pool, as a source of water to fight fire in case of an earthquake. The  hotel stayed in use until 1968.  At right, the burning Kangyō Bank.
