Charlemagne - also known as Charles the Great, was King of the Franks from 768 and Emperor of the Romans from 800 to 814. He expanded the Frankish kingdom into an empire that incorporated much of Western and Central Europe. His rule is also associated with the Carolingian Renaissance, a revival of art, religion, and culture through the medium of the Catholic Church. Through his foreign conquests and internal reforms, Charlemagne helped define both Western Europe and the European Middle Ages.

Seven Kings on this chart are my direct-line great grandfathers starting with my 43rd great grandfather St. (King) Dagobert II & going through to Clovis I's father & then grandfather, Merovech, who was founder of the Merovingian Dynasty & King of the Salian Franks. And NO - I DO NOT think I'm a descendant of Christ. They've done DNA studies on ALL the Merovingian bones & there is NO Middle Eastern DNA involved. Case closed.

King Pepin III, son of Charles Martel and father of Charlemagne, was the first King of the Franks. While his rule was not as great as either his father's or son's, he played an integral role in the foundation of the Holy Roman Empire and began the work of subduing the Saxons, which was taken up and finished by his son Charlemagne. Louis the Pious Carolingian, King of Aquitaine, King of the Franks, Holy Roman Emperor

King Aethelwulf (839-856) House of Wessex. Queen E. II's 33rd great-grandfather. Succeeded by son Aethelbald. Assumed the throne of Wessex upon his father's death in 839. His reign is characterized by Viking invasions and repulsions common to all English rulers of the time. Aethelwulf is remembered, however dimly, as a highly religious man who cared about the establishment and preservation of the church.
