Example of an anaologous color harmony. Analogous colors are any three colors which are side by side on a 12 part color wheel, such as yellow-green, yellow, and yellow-orange. Usually one of the three colors predominates.

There are definitions (or categories) of colors based on the color wheel. We begin with a color wheel.

Nature provides a perfect departure point for color harmony. In the illustration above, red yellow and green create a harmonious design, regardless of whether this combination fits into a technical formula for color harmony.

Tetrads are any four colors with a rectangular relationship on the color wheel, like double complements. The tetradic scheme can be the richest of all the schemes because it uses four colors arranged into two complementary color pairs. - This scheme is hard to harmonize; if all four colors are used in equal amounts the scheme may look unbalanced. If you are having issues with this, you can try choosing a color to be dominant or subduing certain colors.

TRIADIC COLOR SCHEMES: high-energy colors found by choosing three colors that are separated by 120 degrees on the color wheel. Primary (red, blue, and yellow) and Secondary (purple, orange, green) colors are examples of triadic colors.
