The dry Atacama Desert in the north of Chile hides unbelievable riches. Around the turn of the last century the saltpeter works produced sodium nitrate to fertilise the farms of the world. Two of the extraction works, Humberstone and Santa Laura near Iquique, have been recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage sites. This acknowledges their industrial and economic importance at that time.
