This is one of the most haunting photos I have ever seen: hundreds of wedding rings removed by the Nazis from concentration camp victims.

Irena Sendler: The Woman Who Defied The Nazis To Save 2500 Children – Stay at Home Mum

Irene Sendler was head of the children's bureau of Zegota, an underground organization setup to save Jewish children after Poland was invaded by the Nazis. Her and about 30 other women help save infants, children, and teenagers from Nazis.

Having gone through the selection process, a Jewish woman and her children walk to the gas chambers at Birkenau. Birkenau, part of the Auschwitz complex of camps (it was known as Auschwitz II) means "Birch Wood", and was named for the birch forest surrounding it.  Unlike Auschwitz I, which was the main camp, and Auschwitz III, Monovitz, or Buna, a factory work camp, Birkenau was used solely for extermination and cremation of human beings.  I can think of few images more terrible than this.
